SSSC 23 Things Digital - Email

Having used email professionally and privately for more years that I care to mention (cough), this is a 'digital' area in which I feel very proficient. I always follow good practice in terms of address, subject line, content and I am able to add attachments appropriately. I like email as it enables me to hold a trail of communication flow as evidence and as a back up to my memory that I have in fact, passed on info as I was meant to. I think everyone has had that thought in the middle of the night of 'Did I do?' or 'Did I tell?'!

I have always been very cautious in terms of what information I send and to whom. I will copy people in, with permission and only if relevant, such as they need the information also or need to know that information has been passed on. I will use the blind copy function to protect privacy, so as not to pass on email addresses.

However, the landscape is changing with the new legislation around data retention coming in to being. From 25 May 2018 the European Parliament’s official publication of the General Data Protection Regulation will become enforceable. This will have an impact oh how easily we share information, and the consents required to do so. I am attending training this week on this legislation and will then implement the changes on all of my digital practice and responsibilities as well as correct use of email. I do not think I am alone in finding the new legislation a tad scary!

In my personal life I have been glad to see the end of 'funny' or 'chain' emails, which have been replaced with social media apps such as messenger and Facebook. I enjoy a good laugh but always hated 'chainmails' and the likes. IT moves evolves at an even quicker pace!
